Getting Ahead by Bring Your Work and Life into Balance

Stressed womanYou may love your job or hate it, but one thing is certain.  Your job can stress you out!  Pole who are vulnerable to job stress may have particularly stressful jobs.  This is particularly true for executives who are driven by deadlines, and deal with difficult people, or for those of us who have a high internal pressure to succeed.

Here is a list of common work-related problems

  • Too little time
  • Too many responsibilities
  • Multiple interruptions
  • Excessive work loads
  • Emotional distress (anger, frustration worry or fear)
  • Conflicts with other people
  • Uncertainty (not knowing what to do)
  • Discrimination
  • Lack of appreciation

So, if your job and hectic lifestyle seems to take its toll in your physical, emotional and psychological well-being, stress relief techniques can bring your life back into balance.

Now for the myth about corporate loyalty.

In the business world, most employers say they care about their employees.  After all, people are their most important resource, so they’d better take care of them or they may lose them in the long run.  But for many companies, dollars are far more important than people.  When the chips are down, money will be conserved and people will be sacrificed.  The reason why money is more important to these companies than you are is because you can be replaced.  If you burn out, have a heart attack, or become disabled, someone else will take your place.

I don’t mean to imply that every company or all corporate leaders are insincere about their commitment to their employees well-being.  Sometimes you will find a company that is truly committed to you and your welfare.  I know because I work for one of those companies.  But the truth is finding a company like that is pretty rare these days.

The lack of loyalty itself is not the major culprit.  Rather it is our unconscious expectation that produce most of our stress and suffering.

So how do you deal with work stress?  Dealing with stress is critical and the first critical piece of business is to ignore the myth and get down to work doing the best job you possibility can.  Second, identify what areas of your work life are causing you the most stress.  Get out a pen and piece of paper or your journal if you have one (I highly recommend you do keep a journal), and answer the following questions.

  1. This is how I feel about the people I work with
  2. This is how I feel about the environment in which I work
  3. This is how I feel about the values and purpose behind my employer
  4. This is how I feel about the actual day-to-day work I do
  5. My favorite thing about work is
  6. My least favorite thing about work is
  7. I wish my job could change in these ways.

How you manage the stressors at your job depends on what those stressors are.  You can take different approaches:

  • Avoid the stressor
  • Eliminate the stressor (delegate or share a hated task)
  • Confront the stressor (talk to y0ur supervisor)
  • Manage the stressor (add something enjoyable to the task, give yourself a reward after completion)
  • Balance the stressor (put up with the stress but practice stress-relieving  techniques to balance out the effects)
  • Take short breaks. In times when you’re mentally stressed, take a break to clear your mind. Stepping away from your desk  briefly allows you to relax and recharge.
  • Create an uplifting environment. Decorate your office with photos, plants to liven up your workspace, or items that can lift your spirits.
  • Leave work at WORK. It’s important to distinguish your work life and living a life outside of work. Don’t burn yourself out by doing work after you get home at night.

Work is a big part of your life.  And as an executive you have a lot of responsibilities and a great number of people depending on you to be at your best, acting in their best interest no matter what’s going on around you.  If you can do something to avoid, eliminate, confront or balance the stress that comes from your work life, you entire life will be more balanced a less stressful.

Job Loss Survival Skills

Losing a job is so stressful that it can make anyone do things that are counterproductive.  But it doesn’t have to be that way.  So first let’s talk about what not to do when facing a job loss crisis.

  1. Borrow money from anyone and create more debt for yourself unless your facing a dire emergency.
  2. Cancel your medical insurance because you “can’t afford” to pay for it. If you have just one illness requiring hospitalization or surgery it could literally wipe you and your family out permanently. An emergency room visit could cost you hundreds of dollars.
  3. Not let friends and family know that you’re looking for work and you’d appreciate their help. You never know when they see something in the paper that you didn’t notice or someone says something that they wouldn’t connect to your needing work unless you ask them to keep their eyes and ears open.
  4. Neglect to  inform your creditors. Most will work with you. After all it’s far better for both of you to work together then to let everything go until it all comes crashing down around you.

It’s so important to be proactive.  There are some things you can do that will make a huge difference in your life.  Now Let’s look at some of your options:

Reduce monthly expenses. Take a serious look at some of the things you can live without for a while until you get back on your feet. Go through all of your bills and expenses and cut out the things that aren’t necessities. Be honest with yourself – just because you think you can’t live without your cable or cell phone, doesn’t mean it’s true. Some of the first places to look include

  • Get rid of cable
  • Phones – both cell and land line
  • Cell texting or other data communications
  • Make one trip a day instead of several
  • Don’t Eat Out. Instead cook at home
  • Turn off your air conditioner

With a little communication, research, and creativity, you can take advantage of your time off to learn a new skill or start a new venture with skills and passions you already have. Have some fun utilizing your creative ability while making the extra money you need to make ends meet.   These tough financial times don’t have to be devastating. Use these tips to take advantage of the resources available to you to reduce the negative impact on your life. You may even look back on this time as the lucky stroke that pushed you toward success in your new career!

How Stress Relief Can Reduce Accidents

Work overload deadlines, pressures all play a role in work related accidents.  Stress is a leading cause of accidents in the workplace. And stress is a major cause in home accidents as well! When you’re feeling stress, you don’t think clearly and you’re likely to forget simple things.

The brain can only take so much and this stress load is over-riding everything else.  The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that:

  • 25% of workers view their jobs as the greatest source of stress
  • 26% have already experienced job burnout
  • 40% of workers label their job duties as very stressful
  • 75% of workers think that job stress is much worse than it was for workers in the previous generation

Some people thrive on the adrenaline rush they get form diving into challenges they face at work.  But if you’re not stimulated and feel like you’re drowning instead then work stress may be the problem. See if you recognize the signs of stress.

  • You’re often irritable
  • You have trouble concentrating
  • You’re tired
  • You get less done
  • Getting out of bed on a workday morning is a major effort

Are you feeling more stress on your job or in your business?  If you do, you’re not alone.  When you feel stressed, you can protect yourself and others by:

  • Slow down and double check everything you do (this keeps you from having to do things over)
  • Read and re-read any safety directions, even if you already think you know it. Under stress, your brain is distracted
  • Ask for help if you feel the task is too much for you
  • Ask a colleague to double check the process
  • Don’t agree to learn a new task or operate new equipment when you feel stressed or extremely tired. You won’t retain the information well.
  • Take breaks away from the task and relax. Your mind needs to step down from alert status and rest before resuming the task. For every 2 hours of intense work take a few minutes to relax.

Workplace stress isn’t something you tough out to prove your worth. Working under stress places you and your co-workers at risk for accidents. Even if you don’t drive a forklift, you can cause just as much damage by not thinking it out as you reach for a heavy box and drop it on someone’s head pull or wrench your back due to lack of attention to a task

Decreasing stress improves your productively and improves your attitude and your life.
