Natural Stress Relief Remedy – Aromatherapy
April 1, 2009
A natural stress relief remedy that most people never think about – aromatherapy. The first part of the term aromatherapy is just a little misleading. Aroma is usually connected with the sense of smell but aromatherapy is more than that just smell. Although it is true that one method of delivering the therapeutic properties of the essential oils used in aromatherapy is through smell, they are also delivered by being massaged into the skin. Sometimes…VERY rarely….they are ingested. Ingestion of an essential oil should never be undertaken except under the direction of a trained aromatherapist.
There are over 500 different essential oils that are extracted from the leaves, stems, root or bark of various flowers, trees, plants and shrubs. Each essential oil is different and useful for fighting different diseases or different physical and emotional situations. Some essential oils, for example, promote healing by reducing swelling or fighting fungal infections. Other essential oils are used to relieve depression, anxiety or fear. Some essential oils calm while other essential oils stimulate.
The essential oil that is derived from oranges contains a very large quantity of ester which has a calming effect. An Orange blossom bouquet carried by a bride represents the peace and harmony that she will bring to her new home.
Research is being conducted but there as yet is not a definitive answer as to just how aromatherapy works or why. The sense of smell is one of the five senses that most humans are born with but it is also the one that is the most underdeveloped and underused. Researchers have concluded that certain aromas affect our brains in various ways. It is easier to see why aromatherapy that is applied by the means of massage into the skin has a direct effect on the body than why inhaling the scents has such a direct effect. But it is a fact that both methods of delivery have proven to be effective even if the reason remains elusive.
Almost all modern day medications have some basis in ancient herbal medicine. In our modern world, scientists have learned how to reproduce the properties of herbal plants that have been used successfully for thousands of years artificially. They can make synthetic copies of the elements that make herbs work. The problem with these copies is that they often cause many unpleasant or even dangerous side effects that the natural versions do not cause.
In our very modern twenty-first century world, many people are returning to the use of the herbal versions of the synthetic medicines prescribed by physicians in order to avoid the undesirable side effects. Aromatherapy is one of the ways that these herbal remedies can be used.
Maximum Strength Non-Drowsy Formula
November 9, 2008
You’ve seen the ads on television the cold or flu medications that come in a non-drowsy formula. Have you ever exercised and felt almost like you experienced a joy and natural high. You don’t have to be an exercise fanatic to get stress-busting endorphin boost. There’s no question that once you’re “in the zone,” you feel more powerful, more energetic and more positive than you ever knew was possible.
When endorphins kick into your body, your stress immediately diminishes. It’s your body’s way of delivering natural pain relievers, even if that pain is emotional. But exercise has more benefits. It builds muscle tone and flexibility. The more you move, the more you’re capable of doing. That’s why it’s so important to gradually develop an exercise routine so that don’t damage muscles by trying to do too much too soon.
During exercise, there’s more oxygen getting to the brain and a higher level of serotonin which improves your mood. As the activity level increases, so does an incredible sense of well-being.
Taking your exercise to the next level is the way to keep you in endorphin delight. Once you experience it, you’ll want even more. Endorphins trigger an euphoria that are somewhat addictive in a good kind of way. And if you are exercising outdoors, you get another positive emotional lift from the sunshine and fresh air.
Try exercises that are rhythmic. Running, walking, jumping rope, bicycling or swimming these tranquilizing activities influence the brain and keeps the endorphins flowing. Even after the activity is over, there is a lingering positive impact which continues for several hours afterward. Exercise in the morning and you’ll find your begin the day with a natural high.

The Perfect Storm
November 6, 2008
In October of 1991 a storm stronger than any in recorded history hit the coast off of Gloucester, Massachusetts. This “Perfect Storm” — so called because it was three storms combined into one — created an almost apocalyptic situation in the Atlantic ocean, where boats encountered waves of 100 feet — the equivalent of a ten-story building. These storms are some of the strongest and most terrifying manifestations of nature’s strength.
The perfect stress storm –
Overstuff to-do list – can be a harrowing for many who feel like they’ve failed in some way if they weren’t able to accomplished everything they set out to do
Over-achiever – Some people who suffer extreme symptoms of stress wind up that way because they can’t seem to achieve all of their tasks.
Type A personality – Have you ever been called (or called yourself) a Type A personality. We laugh it off but their kind of perfectionism you strive for can cause you endless amounts of stress if you fail to meet your own demands.
Ask yourself how you normally react if you can’t continually be working on something. Is it virtually impossible for you to sit still and relax? What if your cell phone is turned off or you don’t have access to a computer for email – does it send you into a panic?
People like this rely heavily on being able to take action, and when they aren’t constantly achieving more, they become more stressed. The stress builds as your schedule grows even larger.
Soon, you have to schedule things months in advance – with no room for rest and relaxation, which your body needs to unwind and relieve the stress of helping you achieve all of your goals.
Take that rigid schedule and start scheduling some stress-busting activities just as you would an important business meeting. Since you are dedicated to a to-do list, ensure that a portion of those tasks are meant to help you calm down and block out the rest of the tasks on your list.
Pick something you would enjoy, but only do if you had the time. Now, you will have the time – and it will be implemented into your schedule as a “must-do,” rather than a possibility, which never materializes.
You might want to start small and let your stress-reducing activities grow. Schedule a 15-minute walk outdoors or a 20-minute bubble bath. Once you learn to embrace the down time, it will be easier for you to expand it into a longer event that’s meant to improve your mental health by ridding your mind and body of the stress of your day.
You need to take the same level of commitment and dedicate some time to caring for your body and mind. Create your own perfect storm with the 3 R’s of stress relief.
Reveal – Identify stressors that affect our daily lives;
Release – Eliminate the stressors of which we can free ourselves;
Rejuvenate – Learn to deal with stressful situations in a healthy way

Here’s a few quick stress relief tips to decrease depression
October 31, 2008
Is there a relationship between stress and depression – you betcha there is. Everybody’s stressed out these days. If you don’t do something about it can eventually lead to depression. When you feel depressed, you just want to lie on the sofa while the television drones on in the background. You aren’t really watching anything that takes too much energy.
The last thing you want to do is get outside – but that’s exactly what you need to do. The challenge of depression is working against what you feel inclined to do. Yet if you get moving, you’ll find surprising relief from the stress and depression that seems to choke you.
Exercise is an absolute necessity to regaining a sense of self-control. It helps you focus on something other then the situation that’s causing you to feel stressed and depressed. It also provides a better night’s sleep, which helps your immune system rally against your stress factors.
When your stressed to the point of depression don’t place too many demands on yourself. You’ll only feel overwhelmed. So you have to start with simple, specific steps, such as:
- Begin with basic self-care. Set your alarm clock and get out of bed without lying there thinking about it. Then go directly to take a shower and get dressed in clean clothes. No pajamas – real clothes.
- Set a place with real dishes at the table for your breakfast. Even if you only eat a bagel and drink juice, don’t do it standing up in the kitchen. Sit down and eat as if you were in a restaurant. And if you have good china, use it.
- Choose one activity outside the house to complete before lunch. That might be something as simple as walking around the block or going outside to water the flowers.
- Drive to a nearby mall or large discount store. Start at one end and walk up and down every aisle. When you get to the other side, start aisle-walking again until you’re back where you started. Then you can go back and look at anything that seemed interesting. Something is bound to catch your eye and get the focus off the situation. The key is to get moving.
- Go to a park in the late afternoon. Find the swing set and swing. It’s amazing how this activity makes you feel like a child who is happy to be outdoors.
- If you’re going to watch television watch something funny. For one of my clients it was watching the old classic “I Love Lucy”. She had seem all the episodes many times so they don’t require concentration but will still get her to smile
Exercise to relieve stress and depression doesn’t have to mean marathon training or aerobics. You don’t even have to go to the gym unless you’re ready to go. Even simple activities will make a big difference in your mood.
When you realize that nothing in life is permanent and that the storm you’re caught up in right now will eventually pass, you’ll take a big step towards reducing stress and depression. And combine this with tips and techniques above you’ll have an effective strategy to help the situation pass quickly.
I hope this made you think about how you handle stress and depression. Let me know how you’re going to use this information in your life by leaving a comment. See the link underneath this sentence.
Get Up – Get Moving – Get Relief
October 23, 2008
When your stress exercise is the last thing on your mind. As a matter of fact, most of the time you feel like sitting in a corner and indulging in a pity party. If stress makes you feel like you’re all tied up in knots, in a way, you are. Your muscles get tense and your head throbs. You want to make the stress go away, but you feel like moving will only make it worse.
That’s not true! Exercise is an excellent, natural way to relieve the harmful effects of stress. The worst way to deal with stress is to rely on food, drugs or alcohol. Stress eating is not only fattening but can grow into an eating disorder – particularly when stress is compounded by a depressed mood.
Alcohol is a depressant, so any effect it has on stress is temporary, leaving behind more stresses and problems. Drugs – whether prescription or non-prescription – deliver the same problem as alcohol. Substance abuse isn’t the cure for anything.
Stress eating tends to be an overload of things like chocolate, cookies, ice cream or pizza as well as comfort foods like macaroni and cheese. Once you start, it’s like the spoon has a mind of its own and just won’t quit. It’s better to close the refrigerator door and open the front door.
Take a walk or run if you enjoy that. If neither appeals to you, do some other soothing motion-based activity like sweeping the patio, washing the car or cleaning the windows. Choose an activity that requires motion, but very little concentration.
You want to free your mind, not clutter it. Better still, maybe your mind will wander into something positive. If you start thinking about work, stop and refocus on your activity. Create a mantra or something you repeat to yourself over and over again to prevent that stress storm from entering your mind
Pilates is more advanced than Yoga and it’s a more vigorous activity that takes a high level of concentration to complete each move. If you’re focused on your Pilates movements, you don’t have time to think about stressful things.
Dust off your bicycle and find a safe place to ride. Look for quiet streets or parks with bike paths. Pedaling around is good exercise and lets you appreciate your surroundings as you travel.
Dance to your own music. Put on some music with a peppy beat and dance around your living room. Or put on something classical and let your inner ballerina come out. If those aren’t for you, turn to a rocker beat and have fun banging your head like you did when you were a teenager.
No one is looking, so be yourself. You’ll get exercise and probably end up laughing, which is also a physically and emotionally healthy way to beat stress!
So get up- get moving- get relief. Do it today because you only have now, the past is the past and tomorrow only leads to tomorrow.
